Highlands Rewilding is a UK rewilding company, based in the Highlands of Scotland.

Our purpose is to enable nature recovery and community prosperity through rewilding, as a mass ownership company. We aim to become one of the most impactful accelerators of nature-based solutions in the world by 2026.

Highlands Rewilding history

Highlands Rewilding was founded by Jeremy Leggett, with a dedication to using nature based solutions, grounded in science, to support ethically profitable land management and encourage community involvement in rewilding. We aim to forge a new model of community ownership which encourages land reform in the Highlands using innovative finance and investment models.

Our journey began in 2020 with our first project at the Bunloit Estate and Highlands Rewilding was born in 2021, when we set up our second project at the Beldorney Estate. Successful fundraising in 2023 allowed us to acquire Tayvallich Estate. Each site is unique in their own right, but together they are a powerhouse for Scottish nature recovery and a beacon of hope for the global biodiversity treaty recently agreed by 200-plus governments.

By carefully monitoring, measuring and openly publishing the project’s progress in annual Natural Capital Reports, including the methodologies used, results found and land management plans, Highlands Rewilding aims to advance the science of land-based carbon sequestration and biodiversity increase, so accelerating the investability of natural capital. In so doing we hope to become an example which other landowners can follow.

Highlands Rewilding Ltd

Highlands Rewilding Ltd is opening up land-ownership and rewilding to a wide range of co-owners and investors by creating four categories of shareholders:

  1. The founding funders - rewilding advocates who invested in the initial Bunloit Project

  2. Citizen rewilders - who invest from £50 up to £200,000 via crowdfunding

  3. The operations team - including a majority of highland Scots.

  4. Growth funders - for our expansion phase, including socially-progressive financial institutions

All shares hold the same rights, and our shareholder agreement stipulates that shareholders agree with the mission of the company. Shareholders will be able to sell their shares, but only to others prepared to protect the mission of the company far into the future, which includes safeguarding the carbon sequestered, the biodiversity gained, and the rural livelihoods created. In this way, people can earn returns on investment without the company having to sell the land.

We believe local communities have to be closely involved in nature recovery. We are delighted that of our over 800+ shareholders, over 40% are resident in Scotland and nearly 5% live local to the communities where we work.
