Nature recovery and community prosperity through rewilding taken to scale in Scotland, and then beyond

Highlands Rewilding seeks to help rewild and re-people the Scottish Highlands by increasing carbon sequestration, growing biodiversity, creating green new jobs and generating sustainable profit for purpose. By managing land this way, we aim to become a world leader in accelerating nature-based solutions that can help fight the existential and related crises of climate meltdown, biodiversity collapse, and social inequality, whilst helping to rebuild local economies.

In this wide-ranging interview Jeremy Leggett, founder and CEO of Highlands Rewilding, talks about the challenges and opportunities within the nature recovery space and for Highlands Rewilding, the Nature and Community In Perpetuity (NCIP) model, crowdfunding for rewilding, rural repopulation, and his own journey.

  • Does capitalism have a survival reflex?

  • How can we tackle the nature, climate and rural housing emergencies together?

  • How can Highlands Rewilding be a part of the solution?

Our operating model is one of a kind, combining three key elements

1. Natural-capital data is the vital key to breakthrough

We aim to create multi-habitat open air natural-capital verification science laboratories generating the data that can reliably underpin credits in natural-capital, so making the nature-recovery industry confidently investable, so helping tip it into the exponential growth needed for a liveable future.

We target returns, rooted in our data-collection and processing, attractive enough to draw significant investment into our own business, scaling our nature-recovery operations, and building prosperity in the communities where we work

2. We are a mass ownership company

We have 808 shareholders, with no individual or organisation owning more than 13% at present.

3. We are rooted in the communities where we work

We work on the ground, not from afar, and aim to break new ground in consultation, partnership and involvement with the communities of which we are a part. Early evidence suggests we can build a critical mass of support for this approach across multiple stakeholder groups.

  • Our Projects

We manage three sites in Scotland for biodiversity uplift, carbon sequestration and community prosperity. Together they are a powerhouse for Scottish nature recovery.

  • Our science-driven approach

Natural capital data is the vital key to breakthrough in scaling nature recovery. Our research utilises multiple techniques to increase natural capital and help others do the same.

  • Community Prosperity

We are rooted in the communities where we work. We are tackling the inequality of land ownership, championing community involvement and providing local jobs.
